Outlook connection to Outlook.com

How to connect Outlook software to Outlook.com

With the announcement of Outlook.com as a replacement for Hotmail there was one glaring omission – how to sync with Outlook software.

Now we know why – the existing Hotmail connector to Outlook software does work but hasn’t been updated yet.  So the installation isn’t as elegant as it should be.

Here’s the instructions we’ve just received from Microsoft.

“The existing Outlook Hotmail Connector works with outlook.com, but not automatically. Other Windows Live domains such as @hotmail.com and @live.com are automatically configured when you use the Outlook Hotmail Connector. However, you must manually configure an @outlook.com account. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Info on the File menu, and then click Add Account

  2. In the Add New Account dialog box, click Manually configure server settings or additional server types, and then click Next
  3. Click Other, click to select Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector, and then click Next
  4. In the Windows Live Hotmail Settings dialog box, enter your name, email address, and password, and then click OK

When the confirmation dialog appears, click Finish  “

We’ve not been able to verify these instructions because we’re typing this as the ‘final boarding’ call is being made for our flight .

The steps seem to apply to Outlook 2010 software but presumably can be adapted to earlier versions.   It’s unstated but you should install the connector first from here.  Choose the Download button unless you have Outlook 2010 64-bit.
