Office updates and patches for past fixes

Microsoft has today released many bug fixes for Office 2013 and Office 2010. They include a fix for an earlier broken Office patch and a series of OneDrive problems.

From what we can tell from the brief explanations, most of the updates are minor.  But buried among 18 separate Office related updates are some curiosities and embarrassments for Microsoft.

One patch is so strange and poorly explained we’ve devoted a separate web page to it.

Onedrive for Business problems

It seems that the OneDrive for Business program had a lot of previously undisclosed problems.  There’s a specific patch as well as two related bug fixes (see below).  The problems fixed in the patch are:

  • Assume that you use OneDrive for Business to synchronize a library. When you try to synchronize another user’s library by clicking the Sync to a new library button, you may receive the following error message:
    We couldn’t sync this library.
We couldn’t set up this library for you because of a server or list configuration problem. If this keeps happening, please contact your administrator. Once this issue has been resolved you can try setup again.”
  • Assume that you move the location of the Favorites (Links) folder to a network share. When you synchronize a new library by using OneDrive for Business, the OneDrive for Business link is not added to the network share, and the link does not appear in the Favorites list in the Windows Explorer navigation pane.

 Office 2013 patches

Here’s the list of Office 2013 patches with Microsoft’s brief explanation.  The first patch is typically lacking in detail.

  • This update includes stability and performance improvements. KB2881001
  • Assume that you have multiple workbooks open in Excel 2013. When you close a workbook after editing it, Excel 2013 may crash randomly.  KB2889861
  • Assume that you run an Office 2013 application on a Windows 7-based client. When you work with a font symbol that contains a letter within a circle, the font symbol may be displayed as a square box instead of as a letter within a circle. KB2881081
  • Fixes some localization issues in the following language versions: Arabic, Basque, Kazakh, Norwegian, Slovak, Thai, Vietnamese KB2889848
  • When you run Office 2013 Click-to-Run edition and OneDrive for Business (.msi)-based edition at the same time, the Microsoft Office Upload Center may crash because the Csi.dll (Microsoft Office 2013 component – Office Document Cache) file is corrupted. KB2889862
  • The OneDrive CSISYNCCLIENT.EXE process (also known as the Microsoft Office Document Cache Sync Client Interface process) crashes because ACECORE.DLL cannot be loaded. KB2881039
  • Word 2013: Fixes some localization issues in Kirgiz language. KB2889852 (Kirgiz or Kyrgyz is the language of Kyrgyzstan)
  • Visio 2013: Fixes some localization issues in Portuguese language and Thai language. KB2889849
  • Assume that you select a shape in PowerPoint 2013. When you run a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro to invoke the Shape.PasteSpecial method to paste another shape, the selection of the previous shape is lost, and the pasted shape is selected.  KB2889847
  • When you insert a video object into a slide in PowerPoint 2013, you may see a black border on the right or bottom edge of the poster frame. This issue occurs when the width or height of the video object is not a multiple of 16 (MP4/H264) or four (ASF/WMV9).   KB2889847

There are also updates to the Junk Email filter for Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2007.

Lync 2013

An update has fixes for eleven bugs already in the Knowledge Base plus three, new, previously secret bugs:

  • 2992445Bad password count is incremented when Lync 2013 VDI plug-in pairs with a Lync 2013 client
  • 2992447Lync 2013 crashes when a user switches shared desktop from full-screen view to actual size
  • 2992448Desktop sharing or application sharing issues during a conversation in Lync 2013
