Office goes to Scotland

Microsoft has officially launched an Office Proofing Tool/spell checker for the Scottish Gaelic language.

It’s been done by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the statutory language authority in Scotland, and was announced by Microsoft during a meeting at the Scottish Parliament.

Scottish Gaelic has only 60,000 speakers so an Office spell checker is important to helping keep the language ‘alive’ and remove difficulties from inconsistent spelling of the same word.

Just one little thing …

This is good news and we don’t like to complain but there’s only one small detail … we can’t find the new proofing tool to give you a link for downloading!

Update: according to Microsoft UK, the download is now available from here. Select Scottish Gaelic from the drop-down list.

Here’s the Microsoft statement on the release.
