Word and Office have several up “pointing hand” symbols available in some fonts. Here’s the Unicode options explained and shown with the codes and shortcuts to type them in Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook too.
There are various Up pointing hand options in Unicode:
- Index – a pointing index finger with palm facing.
- Backhand Index – pointing index finger with back of hand showing.
- Sideways Index – a side view of a pointing hand.
Plus variations for each of these symbols.
- White – could be called ‘Outline’,
- Black – could be called ‘Filled in’.
It’s easier to see the difference between ‘white’ and ‘black’ if the color is changed and especially with a different background.
For ‘White’ symbols the outline changes color, the rest is transparent and shows the background color.
‘Black’ symbols are filled in with any color you choose from Font Color selector.
Up pointing hands are good for signs or a creative bullet list pointer.

Up pointing hands – White
As you can see, Microsoft has redesigned the White Up Pointing Backhand symbol in both Segoe UI Emoji and Symbol fonts. The other two in their more traditional looks.
Segoe UI Emoji symbols appear differently depending on which application and settings are used, we’ve shown both in the table above.
Up pointing hands – Black
All the backhand symbols are in Segoe UI Symbol font with no ‘emoji’ options.
There’s also an Office icon pointing hand symbol both outline and filled in.
