Facebook for Outlook

See what Facebook friends are doing while using Outlook.

Microsoft has released another ‘social connector’ that lets you see Facebook details inside Outlook. It is available for Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003.

Simply download it from Microsoft and install. Outlook 2010 users should choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version depending on what you have installed.

Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003 users will have to install the social connector infrastructure plus update, if not done already.

Once installed go to an email from someone who has a Facebook account, click the ‘People Pane’ into the larger view. You can see Facebook updates listed in the second tab from the top:

Click on the name to open the Facebook page for that person. Click on the date or image to open a web page for that item.

How it works

Outlook matches a contact with a Facebook page using the email address/es stored in your Outlook Contacts list.

If nothing from Facebook shows up for a contact, check with the person to see what email address they use with their Facebook account. You might need to add another, matching, email address to their Contact entry on your computer.

Update

In the individual contact ribbon is a new button ‘update’. Press this to update details from social connections like Facebook into your Contact.

This might be useful however keep in mind that many people have multiple email addresses and share different details with different people. You don’t want to overwrite private contact details with other info intended for more public distribution.
