Why are some Word 2013 users not seeing ‘Welcome Back’ messages.
As we’ve been mentioning, Word 2013 has a feature to put you back at the last place you were reading in a document … a little flag appears like this:
A few Office-Watch.com say they aren’t seeing these flags and have asked why.
We have no idea why they’re not seeing that Word 2013 feature. It works for larger documents in various formats (we’ve tried .docx, .rtf and .odt).
Size matters
What’s a ‘larger document’? We’re not sure but reopening a single page document doesn’t show the ‘Welcome Back’ flag so there’s some page / screen or other size threshold in play.
There’s no switch or feature to turn off ‘Pickup where you left off’ (at least none that Microsoft has disclosed) and we’ve mentioned a registry hack to stop it, mostly for privacy reasons.
If you’re comfortable with the Windows Registry you might go to HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftOffice15.0WordReading Locations
See if you have a ‘Reading Locations’ key and what documents are listed under it.
That registry key will only store details for documents that Word 2013 wants to save reading location information.
We’d be interested to hear what readers discover via the Feedback page.
