Introducing the Navigation Pane in Excel

Finding your way around an Excel workbook is about to get a lot easier with the arrival of Navigation Pane in Excel 365 for Windows.

Navigation Pane shows each tab, table and other elements in a nested listing for each worksheet.

The Navigation Pane is primarily intended as an accessibility tool but it’s sure to be useful for anyone trying to find their way or understand a workbook.

Start from View | Show | Navigation …

The Navigation Pane lists tables, cells and other elements on each sheet.  Click on an item to highlight it in the worksheet.

Tables and PivotTables can be renamed, right-click for the Rename option.

Charts and images can be deleted, hidden or renamed.

A very useful part is listing external data connections, though currently just as ‘ExternalData_n’.  At least there’s a clue about the source of a particular table.

A simple search will reduce the navigation listing to only matching elements.

Toggle Navigation Pane

On the Excel Status Bar, right-click to select Sheet Number display.

Click on the Sheet Number to toggle the Navigation Pane on/off.

Who gets it?

Navigation Pane is gradually rolling out to Office Insiders starting with Beta Channel v2108 build 14326.20000).
