Microsoft has introduced Mico, the new AI avatar designed to make Copilot feel “friendly,” “expressive,” and, according to Microsoft, more human. Because nothing says cutting-edge technology like a floating blob reacting to your voice with the emotional depth of Jello. Mico promises to make conversations with your computer more “natural,” assuming your idea of natural is chatting with a sentient stress ball. Still, this animated sidekick may signal Microsoft’s attempt to rebrand AI as less intimidating and more … squishy.
What Is Microsoft Mico?
Mico is the visual face of Copilot, appearing when you talk to it using voice. It’s a blob that shifts shape, color, and expression as the AI conversation flows.

- Human-centered AI: Mico is part of Microsoft’s push to make AI feel more approachable and less mechanical.
- Expressive reactions: It emotes in real time, mirroring the rhythm of your conversation.
- Optional presence: Don’t like avatars? Thank heavens you can turn Mico off anytime.
It’s really an ill-conceived corporate phantasm made by a committee that’s totally disconnected from their target audience.
There have been many comparisons to the infamous Clippy but at least Mico can be ignored completely, unlike Microsoft’s animated paperclip that would not go away.
Nostalgic twist
Tap Mico repeatedly and it transforms into Clippy, the unloved paperclip assistant from the late 1990s.
Thankfully, Clippy can’t be a permanent default avatar. It’s Microsoft’s idea of a fun “easter egg”.
Unlike the Office 97 version, this Clippy will disappear on request.
Mico has different voices
Mico comes with different voices with names that seem chosen at random with little or no relation to what you hear.
Birch, Canyon, Meadow, Rain, Grove, Wave, Alder or Elm.

Microsoft’s Bigger Picture
Mico is just cute add-on, part of Microsoft’s broader vision for AI as a companion not just a tool.
By giving Copilot a personality, Microsoft hopes to make digital interactions feel more social, approachable, and human-centered.
Maybe some people will warm to Mico or other AI avatars, personally I’d prefer to poke my eye with a fork than interact with a on-screen blob.
Who gets it?
For now Mico is currently available to users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Presumably the blob with spread across Planet Earth eventually, like the alien invasion in a bad SF movie.
