Undoing the Junk Mail Filter – Outlook 2003

We show you how you can change the Junk mail filters you’ve made for Outlook 2003.

In the last issue of Office Watch we showed you a quick way to delete a message and mark it as Junk. At the time we warned that it’s easy to hit the new Junk button instead of the Delete key. If you hit Junk by mistake then any future messages from that person will be automatically removed from your Inbox.

You can change the Junk mail filters you’ve made for Outlook 2003 by going to Actions | Junk Mail | Junk Mail Options | Blocked Senders. Scroll down the list click on any senders that should not be there and hit Remove.

Sadly there’s no Find option nor sorting available to ease access to what can be a very long list. But there is an option to Export to File which you can use.

Export the existing list to a text file. Then open that file in Notepad or Wordpad (those program have a Find feature to look for particular domains or strings) and edit it. Save the edited text file then import it back into Outlook.

Importing will only add new entries from the text file to the Blocked Senders list. Deleting an email address from the text file and importing the file will NOT remove the address if it’s already stored by Outlook.

You can use the exported text file to help find addresses then delete then from inside Outlook. If you do major changes to the text file (adding and removing) it might be easier to export the existing list, edit it then totally delete the Blocked Senders stored in Outlook. Then import your edited list into Outlook so all your changes are in place.
