Problems Following Access 2000 Installation

A reader’s having some problems after installing Access 2000 over Access 97.

Q:Bob Timms wrote to say he was having problems after installing Access 2000 over Access 97.

A:If you don’t need to use Access 97 any more, it is advisable to first uninstall it, then install Access 2000, but if you do need to use both Access 97 and Access 2000, it is best to install both versions of Office, in separate boot partitions, using an application such as System Commander (see the V-Comm Web site, http://www.v-com.com/, for information on this product), or Boot Magic (included with PartitionMagic (see the PowerQuest Web site, http://www.powerquest.com/, for information on these products)).  System Commander and Boot Magic let you set up multiple boot partitions, with different operating systems if desired, and to have different versions of Office running in each.  I have two Windows 98, 2nd edition partitions, one with Office 97 SR-2 and one with Office 2000.  They share the same Documents and Templates folders, and Outlook uses the same .pst file, but otherwise they are separate installations.
