Outlook 'password' errors

Outlook.com users might strike a problem connecting with Outlook for Windows or Mac which looks like a password problem but isn’t.

Outlook.com may put a security block on your account.  Most likely this happens if you login from a different location or country.  To protect you, Outlook.com will restore the account only when a one-time security code is entered.

All that is clear when you login to Outlook.com from a browser.  The site will take you through the security process.

But there’s no way to show the same messages in Outlook.  All you get is the prompt for a password, which will never work because the problem is NOT the password!  Grrrr.

The ‘take away’ is that if you’re having trouble connecting Outlook to a web based email service (Gmail, Outlook.com etc), try logging into the service via your browser to make sure there isn’t some other problem.

But don’t forget the more likely reason for Outlook’s password prompt – that the login or password you’ve entered are wrong!

And remember to check the ‘Remember my credentials’ box to stop unnecessary password prompts.
