Icons
The obvious place for Office 365 customers to look is Microsoft’s Icon feature. This is a cloud service which can download SVG graphics (Microsoft calls them Icons).
Originally there were no face mask options available. At some stage in late 2020/early 2021, Microsoft added some medical face mask icons, suitable for a COVID-19 world. They were added with an uncharacteristic lack of promotion or even mention.
Go to Insert | Icons and search for ‘Mask’. There are now three medical mask styles available in black and white variations.
On the Graphics Format tab there are many options for changing the basic icon look. Here’s three quick one-step variations on the original mask icon

An alternative is the ‘eyeshade’ icon (fourth and sixth from the left). Flip it horizontally and change Graphics Format | Graphics Outline to black with a thick line (Weight 6pt). The latter fill up the white blocks.
Image search for facemask
Google image search has plenty of results for ‘face mask medical’
Maybe one of those images will suit you, we’re looking for a graphic.
There’s surprisingly few SVG graphics available with broad licencing (i.e. with modification).
The main one is an SVG version of a face with mask emoji on Wikimedia.
Download this image as a SVG graphic (Office 365) or PNG file for earlier versions of Office. More on the Face Mask emoji a little later.
Pixabay to the rescue
Pixabay is a good image and graphics collection and they have some face mask options available.
Try one of these from Doomslayer, Katillustrationlondon, dapple-designers or thedarknut – all shown in the image at the top of this article.
Another option is this image from Publicdomainpictures.net (left) or cropped to just the face with mask (right)
Facemask Emoji
There’s a medical mask emoji, Unicode 1F637 officially called “Face with Medical Mask”
In Windows it’s available in the Segoe UI Emoji font. In Office go to Insert | Symbols, select the font and type in character code 1F637 to jump to the emoji.
In Windows 10, use the loathsome Emoji panel (Win + . ) and search for ‘mask’.
Beware the emoji trap … emoji look different depending on the operating system or device.
Even in Windows, emoji can look different. The Windows 8.1 version of this emoji looks like a building worker mask, it was changed for Windows 10 to the medical mask version.
