Data nerds can have a lot of fun with the Australian election which has a lot of Excel compatible data for the 2025 and past elections. Daily updated stats as 2025 vote counting continues.
Australian federal elections are run by an independent body, the Australian Electoral Commission. The AEC manages voting not just across Australia but also for travelling Aussies in 83 other countries, including Antarctica.
The AEC web site has an impressive range of comma-delimited (CSV) files of data to download. .CSV can be opened directly into Excel but there are wiser methods.
2025 election results
Now the voting is over, the business of counting continues for days, if not weeks.
The AEC Tally Room site has updated stats available for both houses.
For the Senate, it’s possible to drill-down to see the first-preference vote count at the polling place level.
Enrolment statistics
There are general 2025 enrolment statistics available including breakdowns by state, division (electorate), age and gender. With some help from Excel’s Get and Transform, a workable spreadsheet appears.
From a data analysis POV, the data could be better formatted with separate columns for State and Division instead of extra rows. That would allow Excel to immediately summarize / PivotTable the raw data.
2025 election
For the 2025 election there are CSV downloads already listing polling places and candidates. Daily updates on pre-poll and postal voting, which has already exceeded previous records.
More data will appear on that page as the election counting progresses.
Past elections
For comparison, there’s a lot of data from past elections and referendum, for example the 2022 election.
