Office for Mac 2011 update

Another update to Office 2011 for Mac, mostly Outlook 2011.

Microsoft has released another patch for Office for Mac 2011 called the 14.4.3 update.

The update is available from here or AutoUpdate on your Mac should grab and install the patch.

Microsoft is typically cagey about what’s changed in the patch. The only three disclosed fixes are for Outlook 2011.

” This update provides the latest fixes for Office for Mac 2011. These include the following:

· Improves functionality in Outlook for Mac 2011
This update fixes an issue that causes Outlook for Mac not to automatically detect and connect to the connection settings for the Exchange server. Instead Outlook for Mac prompts for manual settings when you use certain proxy auto-configurations.

· Improves functionality in Outlook for Mac 2011
This update fixes an issue that causes Outlook for Mac to delete shared folders that are added by using theOpen Other User’s Folderfeature when certain errors occur on the server.

· Improves functionality in Outlook for Mac 2011
This update fixes an issue that causes Outlook for Mac to continuously try to connect to public folders that are disabled or removed from the Exchange server by the administrator. “

But those aren’t the only fixes in the update. There are others that Microsoft are keeping a secret, their usual policy of non-disclosure.

‘Improves functionality’ – Microsoft euphemism of the day

The short explanation of the latest Office 2011 patch talks about ‘application improvements’ which ‘Improves functionality’. Like all Microsoft euphemisms, it is accurate but misleading.

The three improvements are actually bug fixes in Outlook 2011. The short explanation makes that it clear that the update ‘fixes an issue’.

It sounds silly and petty of Microsoft but the trick works. Some commentators have talked about the update ‘improving features’ in Office for Mac 2011
