WORDPERFECT 13 – SORRY X3

Who said superstition is dead – Corel hasn’t released version ’13’ of Corel WordPerfect Office, instead it’s called ‘X3’.

‘X3’ most interesting new feature is the ability to both save and read Adobe Acrobat PDF files. Microsoft’s upcoming ‘Office 12’ can create PDF files but not read them.

Another feature in Office 12 is already in WordPerfect – what they call ‘RealTime Preview’ where your formatting changes appear in the document as you move across the selections (eg fonts, bold, italics etc).

A glaring omission from Corel’s Office rival has been an email client – WordPerfect Mail fills that gap.

WordPerfect Office supports Microsoft Office document formats – thought not the upcoming ‘Office 12’ formats (which have not been finalized by Microsoft).

The prices range from US$149 for a downloaded upgrade to $299 for the full retail box versions. Downloaded purchases get a measly $10 discount on the retail versions – which is tiny compared to the considerable savings for the company in providing the box, CD and shipping.

The upgrade versions are good value for many people because some Microsoft products qualify for the reduced prices. Having a licensed copy of MS Office 97 and above or Works Suite 2000 or higher drops the retail price from $299 to $159. So that copy of MS Works that was bundled with a new computer might be more useful than you might have thought. They also have a ‘Student and Teacher’ edition at an even lower price.

Corel offers free trial downloads of their products – there’s also a separate trial available for their new Email program.
