Word and Office have several down “pointing hand” symbols available in some fonts. Here’s the Unicode options explained and shown with the codes and shortcuts to type them in Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook too.
There are various pointing hand options in Unicode:
- Index – a pointing index finger with palm facing.
- Backhand Index – pointing index finger with back of hand showing.
- Sideways Index – a side view of a pointing hand.
Plus, variations for each of these symbols.
- White – could be called ‘Outline’,
- Black – could be called ‘Filled in’.
It’s easier to see the difference between ‘white’ and ‘black’ if the color is changed and especially with a different background.

For ‘White’ symbols the outline changes color, the rest is transparent and shows the background color.
‘Black’ symbols are filled in with any color you choose from the Font Color option.
Down pointing hands are good for signs or a creative bullet list pointer.

Segoe UI Emoji symbols appear differently depending on which application and settings are used, we’ve shown both in the table above.
Down pointing hands – Black

All the backhand symbols are in Segoe UI Symbol font with no ‘emoji’ options.
