Clipchamp, Microsoft’s video editor is now boasting background removal which is great for tricks like adding a watermark or ‘bug to a video. But there’s some limitations or ‘gotchas’ to watch out for.
Add an image to a Clipchamp timeline, right-click then choose ‘Remove Background’.
Wait a few moments and the background will be made transparent.
In other words, it’s the same technology that’s in Microsoft Designer.
All or nothing background removal
Which brings us to the first ‘gotcha’.
You can’t tweak or change the foreground/background selection. Either accept what Microsoft’s AI has done or not.
That’s different from ‘Remove Background’ in Microsoft Office which might not be as ‘smart’ but at least you can correct mistakes made by the software.
Images only
Some reports have missed the vital point that only still images get background removal. It’s NOT available for videos.
The still image with removed background can be overlaid on a video but it’s not true Choma key or ‘green screen’ that you see on TV or in movies.
Clipchamp’s Remove Background is still useful but some folks will be understandably disappointed.

One way to use background removal in Clipchamp is to put a watermark or ‘bug’ in the corner of a video.
We took our logo image and used Remove Background to make it transparent. Now it can be overlaid on a video
